Sania Mirza is facing a term on the side-lines and that is definitely not helping her in the WTA Rankings. The Indian tennis sensation has now slipped to the 48th position.
Sania has also taken a hit on the Women’s doubles ranking in which she dropped 7 places and now stands at 38th in list.
Sania Mirza has suffered a setback in her race to progress in the Womens ATP rankings when she injured her knee in the Qatar open. Sania Mirza beat Italy’s Romina Oprandi 6-4, 6-3 and after the match felt pain in her right knee.
Sania immediately went in for scans on the knee and later after results it was revealed that there was no ligament damange thankfully. This means she will not have to undergo any surgery, which was feared earlier.
The doctors have suggested an intense physiotherapy and rehabilitation program. Sania is expected to return to training within four to five weeks.
Sania Mirza came from one set down to win her second round match against Tatiana Pouchek. Sania Mirza is seeded number 5 for this tournament and is understandably the crowd favorite since the Sony Ericsson WTA tournament is being played in her home country.
The winner of the Bangalore open wins $1,70,000 in prize money which is a pretty hefty amount. When the press asked about the initial inconsistency shown in her game Sania said tongue in cheek, “The crowd was so good here, I decided to entertain them for a while.”
After much rumors about Sania Mirza playing with Mahesh Bhupati in mixed doubles, it has now been made offcial atleast by one side. Mahesh Bhupati confirmed at a training session at his academy in Nagpur yesterday.
The duo have played together and won the Afro Asian Gold for India in 2003, and now they will try to follow up that glory at the Grandslams too. Mahesh and Sania will play in the Mixed doubles event at the French Open as well as Wimbledon.
We don’t know if Sania chose Mahesh over Paes or not, but Leander had already commited to play out this season with his mixed doubles partner, Samantha Stosur.
Sania Mirza has climbed back into the top 50 in the WTA rankings and is now standing at 48. The Indian tennis sensation had an ordinary Australian Open losing in the second round to Japan’s Aiko Nakamura in straigts sets. Mirza, India’s top ranked female tennis player, lost 3-6 2-6 in a defeat very similar to last year’s Australian Open.
Sania Mirza climbed up 3 places due to a drop in the rankings of Shenay Perry, Venus Williams and Elena Vesnina. The next Indian in the WTA rankings is Shikha Uberoi, who is currently ranked 228th in the world.
Sania Mirza’s Australian Open has come to an ubrupt end after she lost out in the women’s doubles and mixed double draw too.
After losing in the second round in the women’s singles draw, she was beaten in the third round in the women’s doubles event and also lost in the first round of mixed doubles event.
Sania Mirza had teamed up with Anabel Medina Garrigues from Spain and were seeded 10th in the Grandslam. They were beaten in the 3rd round by pair of Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia and Ai Sugiyama of Japan.
In mixed doubles she partnered with Fabrice Santoro and her performance was even worse as she lost in the opening round itself to the Seed 2 partnership of Mark Knowles and Rennae Stubbs.
